Grand Old Partisan honors George Humphrey, born March 8th 1890. He studied law at the University of Michigan. This savvy businessman worked his way up to president of a steel company. In 1942, the Commerce Department named him to chair its advisory board.
Humphrey’s success in diversifying his company prepared him for the next challenge. American occupation authorities relied on his expertise in transforming the postwar German economy. Impressed with this success, Dwight Eisenhower appointed him Treasury Secretary. The new President wanted someone to end militaristic control over the economy.
He was one of the most influential Cabinet members. Eisenhower said that "when George speaks, we all listen." Humphrey led the way in reducing government expenditures, cutting taxes, stabilizing the dollar. These measures were rewarded by economic growth and a balanced budget.
