Grand Old Partisan honors Arthur Summerfield, born in Michigan, March 17th 1899. Age thirteen, he began working at a factory. The savvy businessman prospered in real estate and petroleum distribution. His most successful venture, a car dealership, became the Midwest’s largest.
In 1944, Republicans elected him their National Committeeman. Chairing his state delegation at the 1952 national convention, he persuaded them to support Dwight Eisenhower for the presidential nomination. Following the convention, the RNC made him Chairman.
A grateful new President appointed him Postmaster General. Throughout his eight years in office, Summerfield modernized operations and boosted a patriotic image for the post office.
