Grand Old Partisan salutes Samuel McMillan, born February 22nd 1826. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, then studied law with Edwin Stanton, who later was President Lincoln’s Secretary of War.
Ambitious drew him westward, to Minnesota. Statehood achieved, McMillan became a judge. He was a lieutenant during the Dakota War. In 1864, a Republican governor named him to the supreme court. Ten years later, another Republican governor promoted him to chief justice. Colleagues praised his "integrity, learning and ability."
In 1875, the legislature elected him to the first of two U.S. Senate terms.
