Grand Old Partisan honors James Birney, born in Kentucky, February 4th, 1793. He studied law after graduating from Princeton. Age thirty-one, he emancipated slaves inherited from his father and declared himself an abolitionist. Risking his life, this man of courage published an anti-slavery newspaper.
In 1840 and 1844, Birney was presidential nominee of the Liberty Party. Four years after that, this small organization was succeeded by the much larger Free Soil Party. Next, the GOP arose to embody opposition to slavery.
A horseback accident in 1845 left Birney an invalid the rest of his life. His eldest son was a Republican Lieutenant Governor of Michigan. Four other sons fought in the Union Army, two of them as generals.
