Grand Old Partisan salutes DeWitt Clinton Littlejohn, born near Syracuse, February 7th 1818. He started out as a food merchant. Entry to politics was mayor of Oswego, then the legislature. Thanks to his leadership, the state Whig Party merged smoothly into a newborn GOP.
Outbreak of civil war found him speaker of the state house. He recruited volunteers and commanded the 110th New York Infantry. Colonel Littlejohn’s regiment was deployed to Louisiana, then Florida. November 1862, he won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 13th Amendment, to abolish slavery, the Freedmen’s Bureau and other GOP achievements received his vote.
Peace restored, this entrepreneur established a railroad and a steamboat service. Littlejohn declined nomination for lieutenant governor. He later became a Democrat.
