Grand Old Partisan honors William D. Washburn, born January 14th 1831. His was the illustrious Republican family from Maine that produced four Members of Congress (from four states), two Governors (from two states), a Secretary of State, two Ambassadors, an Army general and a Navy captain.
After studying law, Washburn relocated to Minnesota, where a brother had a flour mill. Their business built eventually became Pillsbury Foods, later merged into General Mills. They also prospered with railroads and lumbering. President Lincoln appointed him U.S. surveyor general of Minnesota. He lost a bid for Congress but did serve several terms in the legislature.
"Like all his distinguished brothers, he had a taste for politics, and like them belonged to the radical wing of the Republican Party."
In 1878, Washburn won the first of three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1889, the legislature elected him to a U.S. Senate term.
"By his own business energy, integrity, and force of character, he has risen to his present place of honor and esteem."
