Grand Old Partisan salutes John Pickler, born January 24th 1844. During the Civil War, he served in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry, rising to major. His regiment fought in Arkansas and Mississippi.
Union restored, Pickler studied law at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan. He was a Missouri county prosecutor, then Iowa state representative. While a Dakota territorial legislator, this conscientious Republican was first to introduce legislation for women’s suffrage. His wife Alice worked closely with Susan B. Anthony.
South Dakota achieving statehood in 1889, Pickler was elected one of two U.S. Representatives. He won three more terms. Later years focused on the real estate business.
