Grand Old Partisan commemorates election of James Garfield to the U.S. Senate. January 13th 1880, the GOP-controlled Ohio legislature voted for him over his Democrat rival. This came a week after the Congressman and former General bested three other Republicans at a party caucus.
His term would have begun fourteen months later, but Garfield never did become a Senator. Instead, he received the 1880 Republican presidential nomination and went on to become our 20th President.
