Grand Old Partisan honors Elwood Mead, born January 16th 1858. Graduating from Purdue University led to working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He later taught at Colorado Agricultural College and the University of California.
Mead was irrigation investigator for the Department of Agriculture during the McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt administrations. Eight years he worked in Australia. Following this, a Republican Governor appointed him chairman of the land settlement board.
April 1924, President Coolidge named him Commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation. "The biggest task of his career faces him. He is to build the Hoover Dam in the Colorado River, the largest dam ever conceived in the United States." Lake Mead, formed as its water reservoir, was named for this exemplary public servant.
