Grand Old Partisan commemorates the GOP’s first call for a national convention. Opponents of the Democrats' pro-slavery agenda had established, by 1856, Republican parties in several states. There was, however, yet no national organization.
Our nation's capital did have the Republican Association of Washington, headed by abolitionist Lewis Clephane. At the request of five state chairmen, on January 17th this small but enthusiastic committee printed and distributed to newspapers a call for convention. Four more state chairmen soon added their names.
To the Republicans of the United States
In accordance with what appears to be the general desire of the Republican Party, and at the suggestion of a large portion of the Republican press, the undersigned, chairmen of the State Republican Committees of Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin, hereby invite the Republicans of the Union to meet in informal convention at Pittsburgh, on the 22nd of February, 1856, for the purpose of perfecting the National organization and providing for a National Delegate Convention of the Republican Party at some subsequent day to nominate candidates for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency to be supported at the election in November, 1856.
This historic meeting linked together the various state-level parties to form the Republican Party as a national organization.
