Grand Old Partisan honors Benjamin Shields, born in South Carolina, January 9th 1811. Relocating to Alabama, he won election to the state house at age twenty-two. This was followed by a term in Congress and ambassadorship to Venezuela.
With civil war looming, Shields opposed secession. Peace restored, he moved to Texas and became one of the few Republicans in that state. President Ulysses Grant appointed him Collector of Customs at Galveston. He died in 1892, from a cold caught while riding in the rain to vote for Benjamin Harrison.
