Grand Old Partisan salutes Benjamin Norris, born in Maine, January 22nd 1819. This anti-slavery activist was delegate at the 1848 Free Soil Party convention, then studied law. During the Civil War, he served as paymaster for state troops. He attended the 1864 Republican National Convention.
Peace restored, Major Norris worked for the Freedmen’s Bureau, in Mobile. He chaired the state GOP and attended the 1868 constitutional convention. Alabama re-admitted, he won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Receiving his vote was the 15th Amendment, extending civil rights protection to all races.
