Grand Old Partisan salutes Peter Tali Coleman, born in American Samoa, December 8th 1919. His parents were a Samoan mother and a U.S. Navy officer father. He was an army captain during WWII. He graduated from Georgetown University Law School, then worked at the Interior Department.
Coleman served as the territory’s attorney general during the Eisenhower administration. In 1956, the President appointed him Governor, the first native at that position. His administration established a territorial constitution.
In 1977, after resigning as deputy high commissioner of Pacific Island territories, Coleman became American Samoa’s first elected Governor. He twice won re-election and was founding chairman of the local Republican Party. His daughter, Amata Coleman Radewagen, is congressional territorial delegate.
