Grand Old Partisan honors Jeremiah Brown, born November 14th 1841. He started out working on steamboats along with Mark Twain. His sister Hallie Quinn Brown was a distinguished educator.
Settling in Cleveland, Brown worked for the county court, then was the state’s first Black deputy sheriff. He attended many state and national conventions for protecting civil rights. This ardent Republican campaigned for local candidates.
In 1885, Brown won election to the state house. His term focused on advancing legislation to end racial discrimination. He held Treasury Department positions during the Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley administrations. The state GOP named him to its central committee.
