Grand Old Partisan salutes Howard Baker, born in Tennessee, November 15th 1925. His birthplace, Scott County, was renowned for having voted to secede from the Confederacy and remain loyal to the Union. Postwar, it became a Republican stronghold.
Baker served as lieutenant aboard a patrol torpedo boat during WWII. He attended Tulane University and the University of Tennessee Law School. His wife was daughter of Republican Senator Everett Dirksen.
In 1966, Baker won the first of three U.S. Senate terms. This made him the Tennessee GOP’s first candidate elected to statewide office in more than forty years. He keynoted the 1976 Republican national convention. Following year, he was elected Minority Leader, and in 1980, Majority Leader.
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan appointed him White House Chief of Staff. President George W. Bush named him Ambassador to Japan. Baker was remembered as "the quintessential mediator, negotiator and moderator."
