Abraham Lincoln meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe

Grand Old Partisan spotlights the meeting of Abraham Lincoln and a famous abolitionist, on November 25th 1862. Harriet Beecher Stowe was author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the second best-selling book of the 19th century.

"Mrs. Stowe, right glad to see you!" said the President. "So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war!" Republican Senator Charles Sumner commented that would never have been elected President if not for its publication.

Afterward, she praised Lincoln’s "strength swaying to every influence, yielding on this side and on that to popular needs, yet tenaciously and inflexibly bound to carry its great end."
