Grand Old Partisan salutes George Spalding, born in Scotland, November 12th 1836. He immigrated to Buffalo, New York with his parents. The ambitious teen settled at Monroe, Michigan and bought a farm.
Outbreak of civil war finding him teaching school, Spalding enlisted in the state’s 4th Volunteer Infantry. He fought in Virginia and Tennessee, surviving three gunshot wounds and being promoted to colonel. Peace restored, he was town postmaster. President Ulysses Grant named him a Treasury Department special agent to evaluate trade along the Mexican border. A term as mayor followed.
Spalding chaired his county Republican committee. In 1894, he won the first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. President William McKinley later re-appointed him postmaster. He was also president of a local bank.
