Grand Old Partisan honors James Burke, born in Pennsylvania, October 21st 1867. While studying law at the University of Michigan, he established the American Republican College League and became its chairman. May 1892, this organization, ancestor of the College Republicans, was founded at a banquet in Ann Arbor. William McKinley delivered the keynote address, to one thousand five hundred delegates from across the nation.
In 1904, Burke won the first of five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Theodore Roosevelt sent him to a conference in Brussels. He served on the banking and currency committee during passage of Federal Reserve Act and directed the Office of War Savings during WWI. This ardent Republican attended eight national conventions and was the RNC’s General Counsel.
