Grand Old Partisan salutes Samuel Merrill, born in Maine, August 7th 1822. He taught school in Maryland but, appalled by the slavery he encountered there, soon returned home. In 1854, the abolitionist was elected state representative.
In 1856, Merrill moved to Iowa and set up a wholesaling company. Business interests expanded to finance and real estate. This civic-minded Republican was elected to the state house.
Outbreak of civil war, he helped organize support for the Union cause. Summer 1862, the Republican Governor gave him command of the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry. His regiment fought in Missouri and Mississippi, where the "eminently brilliant and daring" Colonel Merrill suffered grievous wounds.
In 1867, the Iowa GOP nominated him for governor and drafted a platform that vowed support for economic development and voting rights for African-Americans. He won decisively and won another two-year term by an even larger margin. The industrious Governor Merrill promoted railroad construction and improvements along the Mississippi River. Public education was another priority. He laid the cornerstone for the state Capitol. After leaving office, he worked for a bank.
