Grand Old Partisan salutes Orindatus Simon Bolivar Wall, born to a slave in North Carolina, August 17th 1825. Emancipated by his plantation owner father, he relocated to Ohio and became a shoemaker. In 1858, "OSB" helped a runaway slave to escape.
During the Civil War, Wall recruited volunteers for the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. As an army captain, he served as quartermaster for the Freedmen’s Bureau in South Carolina.
Wall attended Howard University Law School and was a police magistrate in Washington, DC. This conscientious Republican served two terms in the territorial legislature. President Ulysses Grant made him the city’s first justice of the peace. The Washington Post held him to be "one of the best known colored lawyers." Over the years, he hosted Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and other luminaries.
