"a born fighter, tenacious of his opinions"
Grand Old Partisan honors Joseph Warren, born in Maine, July 22nd 1811. His journalism career started at Bangor. After several years in Lancaster, Pennsylvania he moved to Auburn, New York. In 1854, the Detroit Tribune, an influential Whig newspaper, made him editor.
That year, Warren and other newspaper editors called on all opponents of slavery in Michigan to unite politically: "Our proposition is that a convention be called irrespective of old party organizations, for the purpose of agreeing upon some plan of action that shall combine the whole anti-slavery sentiment of the State, upon one ticket."
Their efforts led to the nation's first state Republican convention, at Jackson on July 6. Thousands gathered Under the Oaks nominate a slate of candidates and elect officers for this Grand New Party. Appreciating his foresight and pro-freedom zeal, they named him Chairman of Michigan Republican State Committee. His principal task was to establish county-level organizations.
President Abraham Lincoln appointed him to a position at the Pension Office. Warren remained on the job for twenty-five years, until his death.
