Grand Old Partisan salutes John Mitchell, born in rural Pennsylvania, July 28th 1838. Teaching school followed graduation from Bucknell University. He served as an infantry captain during the Civil War.
Union restored, Mitchell studied law and was elected county prosecutor. This diligent Republican next served in the state house. In 1876, he won the first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Then, the legislature elected him to the Senate, as a compromise between two party factions. He closed out his career with twelve years on the state bench.
