Grand Old Partisan salutes John Adams Dix, born in New Hampshire, July 24th 1798. He was an army officer fifteen years before practicing law in upstate New York. His political career began as secretary of state, then assemblyman. In 1845, the legislature elected him to a U.S. Senate vacancy. Conscientiousness led him out of the Slavery Party, to run for Governor as the Free Soil nominee.
Outbreak of civil war, President Lincoln appointed him a major general. It was Dix who arrested pro-Confederate legislators in Maryland, thereby preventing that state from seceding. He played an important role suppressing the New York City draft riot.
Peace restored, Dix was ambassador to France. This noble Republican went on to be governor of New York.
