Grand Old Partisan salutes James Shackelford, born near Louisville, July 7th 1827. He was a lieutenant during the Mexican war, then studied law.
Outbreak of civil war, Shackelford enlisted as colonel of the 25th Kentucky Infantry. He later recruited the 8th Kentucky Cavalry. His regiment helped defeat a rebel raid into the Bluegrass State. This victory merited promotion to brigadier general.
Always a staunch Republican, Shackelford cast an electoral vote for James Garfield and later for Benjamin Harrison. In 1889, President Harrison appointed him district judge for the newly-created federal court at Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was known to be "studious, energetic, and industrious."
