Grand Old Partisan highlights Richard Nixon’s friendship with Martin Luther King. Pages 185-86 of Back to Basics for the Republican Party describe their first meeting. Following up on this initial discussion in Ghana, the Vice President invited Reverend King, as well as Ralph Abernathy, to Washington. Media dubbed it the first 'summit conference' on civil rights.
June 13th 1957, Nixon received King and Abernathy at the U.S. Capitol. He had invited them to Washington to discuss ways of advancing voting rights. They conferred two hours. Top on their agenda was devising a strategy to overcome Democrat opposition to the GOP’s proposed 1957 Civil Rights Act. This bill had been written by Attorney General Herbert Brownell, a former Chairman of the RNC.
Reverend King stated: "As we move peacefully towards our goal without rancor and without bitterness, the spirit of good-will that a campaign of this nature will generate will be a boon to the spiritual growth and the democratization of our nation."
Nixon wrote to his fellow civil rights activist thanking him for the discussion.
