Grand Old Partisan commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of the Republican Party. Twenty thousand friends of freedom gathered at Ripon, Wisconsin to celebrate the GOP’s 75th anniversary. March 1854, opponents of slavery first came together as Republicans.
The schoolhouse where they met was stage for a keynote address by Secretary of War James Good. He was introduced by Wisconsin Governor Walter Kohler.
The three-day event began on June 7th 1929. Festivities included marching bands, a parade, floats with historic themes – and an elephant. A telegram was received from Ripon, England, for which the town was named: "Greetings, success to celebration".
Jackson, Michigan – site of the first-ever Republican state convention – hosted its own Diamond Jubilee a few weeks later.
