Grand Old Partisan applauds Harriet Beecher Stowe, born June 14th 1811. Age twenty-one, she moved from Connecticut to Ohio. An influential friend there was Salmon Chase, the future Republican Governor and Senator and Treasury Secretary and Chief Justice.
March 1854, Stowe published An Appeal to the Women of the Free States of America on the Present Crisis in Our Country. Her husband signed a petition against the Kansas-Nebraska Act, a Democrat scheme to extend slavery into western territories. The couple sheltered runaway slaves in their home.
Stowe wrote the classic anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It was first published, in serial form, by a newspaper whose manager later founded the DC GOP. Back to Basics for the Republican Party explains: "Perhaps the biggest best-seller in American history, the book opened millions of eyes in the North to the horrors of the slave system, to which most southern Whites reacted by rallying to its defense."
At a meeting with Abraham Lincoln in November 1862, the President quipped famously: "So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war."

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government.
