Grand Old Partisan is a fan of the 19th President. May 10th 1877, Rutherford Hayes ordered a telephone installed at the White House, in the telegraph room. Its phone number was 1, and originally, communication was only with the Treasury Department.
A demonstration at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, seven months earlier, was his first experience with the device. Listening intently, Hayes remarked: "That is wonderful."
In 1929, President Herbert Hoover had a phone installed at his Oval Office desk.
