Grand Old Partisan honors Nathan Sargent, born May 5th 1794. His career began publishing a newspaper in Buffalo and then writing a biography of presidential candidate Henry Clay. In 1847, the Whig majority elected him Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was among lodgers at a boarding house along with Congressman Abraham Lincoln. President Millard Fillmore appointed him Register of the Treasury.
Sargent became a political commentator. Lincoln kept him apprised of anti-slavery views within the Republican Party. In 1861, the President named him Commissioner of Customs. As such, he sustained financing of the Union war effort.
