Grand Old Partisan honors Donald Cameron, born May 14th 1833. His father was Secretary of War and ambassador to Russia during the Lincoln administration. His wartime service to the Union was managing a strategic railroad.
Cameron acquired a reputation as "boss" of the Pennsylvania GOP. Secretary of War during the 1876 presidential election, he deployed troops in an attempt to prevent Democrat vote fraud in the three southern states still under Republican control.
Following year, the Pennsylvania legislature elected him to replace his father in the U.S. Senate and re-elected him three times. RNC Chairman during the 1880 Republican National Convention, he promoted the nomination of James Garfield over front-runner James Blaine. Senator Cameron was an outspoken defender of African-American voting rights.
