Grand Old Partisan honors Delafield Smith, born in Rochester, May 8th 1826. President Abraham Lincoln named him U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. His most famous case was the prosecution and execution of a slave trader.
A ship captain had been captured by the U.S. Navy while transporting slaves from Africa. Smith brought the case to trial. Conviction achieved, he insisted that the death penalty be imposed. A hanging would, in his view, dissuade others from enslaving Africans.
President Lincoln refused to commute the sentence. February 1862, Nathaniel Gordon was hanged.
Smith prosecuted the Democrat ringleaders of the 1863 New York City draft riots. He co-founded the Union League, to support Republican policies, and was an effective speaker for the Ulysses Grant presidential campaign. Later years, he was the city’s corporation counsel.
