William Hyman, the first Republican Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court

"His life had been devoted by choice to the unpopular and underdog side."

Grand Old Partisan commends William Hyman, born April 30th 1814. Law studies followed graduation from the University of North Carolina. He then moved to Louisiana.

Hyman was a county judge at outbreak of civil war. He opposed secession and fled to Union-controlled New Orleans. April 1865, the Republican Governor named him Chief Justice. His tenure ended November 1868 upon ratification of a new state constitution. Later years, he was county judge and surveyor.
