Grand Old Partisan honors Benjamin Arnett, born March 6th 1838. An injury suffered while unloading boats led to amputation of a leg. Resolutely, he studied to teach elementary school and went on to be ordained minister of the African Methodist Episcopal church. Many years he was pastor of a large congregation in Cincinnati.
Arnett joined the National Equal Rights League organized by Frederick Douglass. He spoke at various events for Republican candidates. This respected cleric was the first Black foreman of an otherwise 'all white' jury. In 1879, the GOP-majority Ohio legislature named him their chaplain. He later won a state house term and pressed for desegregating public schools.
Arnett delivered an opening prayer at the 1896 Republican National Convention. It was he who provided the Bible which William McKinley used for his first presidential inauguration. The new President, a longtime friend, often sought his advice.
