Grand Old Partisan honors John Kasson, born January 11th 1822. He attended the University of Vermont, then studied law. Visits to Virginia opened his eyes to the evils of slavery. In 1848, his love of liberty led him out of the Democratic Party and into the Free Soil Party. Kasson later relocated to Des Moines. Recognizing his intellect and organizational talents, the Iowa Republican Party soon named him state chairman.
Kasson co-authored the platform of the 1860 Republican National Convention. President Lincoln appointed him First Assistant Postmaster General. In 1862, he won the first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Thanks to him, the metric system became legally recognized for commerce.
His first diplomatic assignment was to an international postal conference. Kasson followed this with another two congressional terms. President Hayes named him ambassador to Austria-Hungary. He next won two more congressional terms. President Arthur appointed him ambassador to Germany. He served on international commissions for President McKinley.
"Among the eminent statesmen who have reflected credit upon our State, none have ranked higher in notable achievements and intellectual endowment than John Kasson."
