Grand Old Partisan honors Frank Cannon, born in Salt Lake City, January 25th 1859. His father was a Mormon leader. He started out as a newspaper reporter and editor. He co-founded the Utah Republican Party.
In 1891, Cannon was elected congressional delegate. Upon statehood five years later, the legislature sent him to the U.S. Senate. He soon joined a GOP splinter group that favored more coinage of silver, a policy that raised prices while boosting the mining industry. He next became a Democrat. Later years focused on journalism.
