Grand Old Partisan laments that few Republicans remember what used to be common knowledge: the Confederates were DEMOCRATS, every single one of them. In fact, during and after the Civil War, most Republicans viewed the Confederacy as a Democratic Party insurrection against the U.S. Government.
This famous cartoon illustrates the unholy alliance between the Confederates and their northern Democrat allies, the seditious Copperheads. After the war, the Ku Klux Klan was the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party, while southern Unionists, mainly the African-Americans and many poor whites, became the core of the Republican Party in the region.
Again and again, the modern Republican Party blunders because most GOP leaders act like the world began the day they were born. Key to campaigning against Democrats more effectively is for Republicans to appreciate the true heritage of our Grand Old Party.

"This is the most amazing book about politics that I have ever read. The Overview should be required reading for anyone with even a minor interest in government.
