Grand Old Partisan honors Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, born in Baltimore, November 20th 1900. He attended college and the University of Maryland Law School at night, while a bank teller. His political career began as a mayor‘s executive secretary. This conscientious Republican established several charities during the Great Depression.
In 1943, on his second attempt, McKeldin was elected mayor. His administration built BWI airport, schools and hospitals. He contended with Democrat racism toward the growing Black population.
In 1950, on his third try, McKeldin won the governorship. Focusing on infrastructure, he established the Baltimore Beltway as well as highways between DC and Annapolis. Civil rights organizations gave him awards.
McKeldin backed Dwight Eisenhower for the GOP’s 1952 presidential nomination. He went on to be re-elected. In 1963, grateful residents again elected him mayor.
