"exemplary in private life, upright and honorable in his business and social relations, revered and esteemed by all who knew him, a strong partisan, and yet courteous to those who opposed him, strong minded, possessed of sound practical common sense, able and efficient in his chosen profession, superior in executive ability"
Grand Old Partisan honors Orange Ferriss, born in upstate New York, November 26th 1814. He attended the University of Vermont, then practiced law back home. His legal career took him from justice of the peace to inspector of public schools to county judge.
In 1866, Ferriss won, as a Republican, the first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He counted himself among the bitterest opponents of Andrew Johnson, the Democrat president. On the negative side, he opposed the purchase of Alaska. President Ulysses Grant appointed him to the Southern Claims Commission, which reimbursed southern Unionists for their contributions and sacrifices in support of the U.S. Government during the Civil War. President Rutherford Hayes named him Second Auditor of the Treasury.
"He leaves behind the noblest monument which can survive a good man — the example of an honest, worthy and useful life, in which he was true to his God, his country and his friends, faithful at home and trusted abroad."
