James Jaquess, intrepid Emissary for Abraham Lincoln

Grand Old Partisan salutes James Jaquess, born in Indiana, November 18th 1819. Studies for the ministry followed graduation from DePauw University. He met Abraham Lincoln while president of an Illinois college.

Jaquess vociferously denounced Democrats and slavery. Outbreak of civil war, he enlisted as chaplain. Later, a Republican Governor commissioned him colonel of the state’s 73rd Infantry. His regiment battled through Kentucky and Tennessee.

July 1864, the President authorized him to discuss peace terms with Confederate leaders. Jaquess met in Richmond with Jefferson Davis, who said fighting would continue until rebels achieved victory. This statement quashed Democrat hopes for a truce, thereby helping Lincoln win re-election.
