Grand Old Partisan salutes Henry Markham, born November 16th 1840. Outbreak of civil war, he enlisted in the 32nd Wisconsin Infantry. The courageous lieutenant survived two severe wounds.
Peace restored, Markham practiced law in Milwaukee. He later relocated to Pasadena and worked for various mining companies. In 1884, he won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. After four years back in the private sector, this dynamic Republican was elected Governor of California. His administration garnered praise for skillfully dealing with a nationwide economic depression.
