Grand Old Partisan honors George Tinkham, born in Boston, October 29th 1870. He studied law after graduation from Harvard. Politicking for the young Republican began as a city councilman, then a state senator. In 1914, he won the first of fourteen terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
This "unabashed eccentric" was very popular, never receiving less than 56% of the vote. Tinkham earned his appellation "the conscience of the House" for steadfastly defending African-Americans from their Democrat oppressors. He called Democrat Vote Fraud "the most colossal election fraud the world has ever known."
Tinkham opposed most of the New Deal, though he did vote for Social Security. His congressional career only came to an end because of redistricting.
