Republicans Abolished Slavery in Missouri

Grand Old Partisan commemorates the abolition of slavery in Missouri. January 11th 1865, a state convention approved a new constitution that abolished slavery immediately.

Republicans had overcome Democrat opposition to abolishing slavery.

Chairing the convention was Arnold Krekel, delegate at the GOP’s 1864 national convention. President Lincoln named him federal judge. New constitution approved, Republican Governor Thomas Fletcher issued his Proclamation of Freedom.
