"a life-long advocate for and an example of what women could contribute to public life"
Grand Old Partisan honors Marion Martin, born near Bangor, January 14th 1900. She studied at Wellesley College and the University of Maine. Her mother had been a women’s suffragist.
Martin won election to the state house and then the state senate. In 1936, the Maine GOP named her Republican National Committeewoman. While serving as RNC assistant chairman, this tireless worker saw the need for bringing uniformity and effectiveness to the thousands of Republican women’s groups. Her brainchild, the National Federation of Republican Women's Clubs, was established in 1938. It later renamed itself the National Federation of Republican Women.
After retiring from GOP leadership, Martin headed the state commission of labor and industry.
