Grand Old Partisan attended a ceremony in honor of Tomas Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. On March 7, Ambassador Petr Gandalovic and other Czech officials presented wreaths at the statue of President Masaryk in Washington, DC.
In 1918, Masaryk issued his call for Czechoslavak independence while exiled in the United States. Returning to his native land, he was elected to the presidency.
The statue was placed at the site ten years ago, at a ceremony headlined by President Vaclav Havel. Tomas Masaryk Memorial Park is at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and 22nd Street, near Dupont Circle.
