A reader of my Grand Old Partisan blog posted this superb comment about a recent article:
"I just finished doing a little historic research on the founding of Oklahoma and agree with Michael Zak's article George Stephanopoulos defends the Terrorist Wing of the Democratic Party.
Before statehood, Oklahoma Territory was administered by officials appointed by a a Republican president, Theodore Roosevelt. It. was a place where freed slaves came to set up thriving communities, away from the Jim Crow laws that dominated the Democratic South. The KU Klux Klan, terrorist wing of the Democrat Party, sent some good old boys to the constitutional convention, where they tried to put Jim Crow laws into the state constitution being drafted.
President Roosevelt refused to allow them statehood until they removed the provision that segregated public transportation. They relented, and Democrats were swept into public office. Senate Bill One was passed making segregated transportation a LAW that was not overturned until the 1960's by federal mandate.
Small towns of freed slaves thrived until the Democrats took over. Soon after statehood, A.C. Hamlin (R), was the first black elected to the legislature, but Democrats put into place laws to prevent blacks from voting and so Hamlin was defeated for re-election.
Oklahoma was dominated by Democrats right up until January 2011, when for the first time since statehood, Republicans captured both state houses as well as the entire executive branch. Voters are watching closely and interacting continuously to be sure they keep their promises..."
