In the novel 1984, the villain, O'Brien, describes his vision of an ideal society: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – forever.”
In the Journolist, lefty pundit Spencer Ackerman describes his own vision of an ideal society: “What is necessary is to raise the cost on the right of going after the left. In other words, find a rightwinger’s and smash it through a plate-glass window. Take a snapshot of the bleeding mess and send it out in a Christmas card to let the right know that it needs to live in a state of constant fear.”
Ackerman is clearly positioning himself for a high-level position at the Ministry of Truth, hoping for boots that are sturdy and uniforms that are snappy.
