Ruth Hanna McCormick, Republican suffragist and congresswoman

Ruth_mccormickGrand Old Partisan salutes Ruth Hanna McCormick, born this day in 1880.  She was the daughter of Senator Marcus Hanna (R-OH).  A prominent suffragist, she was the first to chair the Woman’s Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee and the first Republican National Committeewoman for Illinois.

In 1928, McCormick won a term in the U.S. House of Representatives but lost a bid for the U.S. Senate two years later.  She then moved to New Mexico and served as a delegate to the 1936 and 1944 Republican National Conventions.

Michael Zak is a popular speaker to Republican organizations around the country, showing office-holders, candidates and activists how they would benefit tremendously from appreciating our Party's heritage of civil rights achievement.  Back to Basics for the Republican Party is his acclaimed history of the GOP from the Republican point of view.  See www.republicanbasics.com for more information.
