Frances Payne Bolton, Republican pioneer

Frances_payne_boltonGrand Old Partisan salutes Frances Payne Bolton (R-OH), born this day in 1885.  While a member of the Ohio Republican state committee, she was elected in 1940 to succeed her deceased husband in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Bolton went on to serve fifteen terms.  She rose to become the ranking minority member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.  In 1955, she was the first woman to head a U.S. delegation overseas.  Among her many accomplishments was protecting the scenic beauty of Mount Vernon, by sponsoring legislation to purchase the land across the Potomac.  Rep. Bolton was a delegate to five Republican National Conventions.

Michael Zak is a popular speaker to Republican organizations around the country, showing office-holders, candidates and activists how they would benefit tremendously from appreciating our Party's heritage of civil rights achievement.  Back to Basics for the Republican Party is his acclaimed history of the GOP from the Republican point of view.  See www.republicanbasics.com for more information.
