Frances Payne Bolton, Republican pioneer
Grand Old Partisan salutes Frances Payne Bolton (R-OH), born this day in 1885. While a member of the Ohio Republican state committee, she was elected in 1940 to succeed her deceased husband in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bolton went on to serve fifteen terms. She rose to become the ranking minority member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 1955, she was the first woman to head a U.S. delegation overseas. Among her many accomplishments was protecting the scenic beauty of Mount Vernon, by sponsoring legislation to purchase the land across the Potomac. Rep. Bolton was a delegate to five Republican National Conventions.
